5. MACHU PICCHU (PERU)

Machu Picchu was built as the property of the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438-1472). Often erroneously referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas" and is quite a familiar icon of the Inca civilization. It was declared a Historical Sanctuary of Peru in 1981 and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983.
